Darien is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,901 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name means "safe place" in the Ojibwe language. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Darien were fur traders from Hudson's Bay Company. They called it Green Bay because of the rich birch and oak trees that grew there. In 1803, French farmers named La Prairie settled here and started to grow corn and wheat; soon enough, they had a store and school as well. In 1836, George Clinton founded the village of White Sands on the south side of Lake Michigan near present-day West Dundee; he named it after his hometown of White Sands on Long Island, New York. President James K. Polk visited White Sands in March 1840 while campaigning for election as president; he was so impressed by it that he ordered construction of a naval academy there to train American sailors for future war with Spain. In 1843, many Germans who had sided with Napoleon during the French Revolution moved to Darien to start over again after his defeat at Waterloo. They called their new community Herrenhausen (literally " Lords' House"). Many business owners and professionals from Chicago moved here as well; this included John Danko Sr., one of America's earliest millionaires through his holdings in Danko Brothers Manufacturing Company (now known as Dole Foods). For many years this vibrant community continued to thrive despite frequent economic crashes caused by wars within Europe or natural disasters like floods and fires). Darien was a small town in upstate New York until the late 1800s, when it became the center of an agricultural region that includes much of Illinois. The area now known as Darien was first settled by Dutch and English farmers in the early 17th century, but it wasn't until after the Revolutionary War that development began. In 1784, following the signing of the Treaty of Paris, Connecticut conveyed land to New York for $10,000. This grant helped start what would become one of the most important economic developments in New York State history – development of agriculture led to increased trade and investment throughout rural America. In 1802, when New York state merged with other states to form the United States, Darien became part of Illinois. At first, settlers here were mostly farmers who grew corn and other crops on their properties. However, over time they started to import goods from other parts of America and Europe, which caused businesses and jobs to grow in Darien. By 1840, there were around 100 businesses in town – many involved in manufacturing products such as candles and hats. The town's fortunes changed during World War II because so many local companies produced military supplies such as munitions and foodstuff. After the war ended however, industry quickly faded away as people turned their attention back to farming again. As recently as 2000 however, there were still few commercial buildings aside from a few grocery stores and a post office. But despite this decline since then- growth has been sporadic at best due to lack of interest from developers or infrastructure improvements necessary for larger scale projects like retail or residential development.
The town of Darien, Illinois was founded in 1803 by John Darien. The town became a United States military garrison during the War of 1812. In 1815, the town was renamed to its present name after General George Washington's victory at Yorktown.
