Darien is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1838 by John Darien and his family. The population was 20 at the 2010 census. The Town of Darien was consolidated with the village of Northville on November 1, 2009. The town is named after John Dariens older brother who settled there in 1835. After purchase of land from the Peoria government for $1,000, John Dariens built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river where he lived until 1840 when he and his family moved to what is now Northville. In 1871, when it became an incorporated village, Northville chose to name its first post office after John Darien's older brother-in-law George Prentice (1792-1865). John Dariens Elementary School opened in 1906 and has been open every day since then; it is also the only public school in town. The building currently used as the High School can be found on Main Street north of Green Street which served as both schools until 1959 when Darien Middle School opened adjacent to Parkview Baptist Church while Northville High School vacated their building across Green Street and reopened on Clinton Avenue east of Center Road serving students from nearby towns such as Addison and Arlington Heights
Darien was founded in 1847 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It became a town on the Illinois River in 1853. In 1874, it was renamed after General John F. Kennedy, who had been assassinated that year. The town's population reached 10,000 in 1960.
