Darien, Illinois is a small town in the northwestern corner of Illinois. It was founded by Irish immigrants in 1855 and named after their homeland, County Kerry. The population was 5,860 at the 2010 census. Darien is one of three villages in Darien Township which are part of the Carbondale-Marion Township School District. The first people to live in what is now Darien were the Uptown Settlers who arrived from County Kerry around 1800. They constructed some early homes on North Main Street and other parts of what is now Market Square. In 1855, two men from County Kerry named John Fenton and Cornelius McGrath came to America and set up shop near where present day Elm Street meets Market Square. The Uptown Settlers would continue to live in this area until they left for good around 1870 when they moved out west to Illinois’ Urbana–Champaign area. The first school in what is now Darien was built on land donated by Captain John Witherspoon in 1857. This school was known as “Pinecrest” because it sat atop a hill on the edge of town blocks from where most people lived at that time. The first schoolmaster at Pinecrest was George Washington Whitehurst who taught third grade before leaving for good around 1860 due to health reasons. He would be followed by his successor James Stevenson who served until 1865 when he too departed for good due to ill health). With only 3rd grade being offered through public schools back then, many residents had to attend private academies or religious schools which were located further away within townblocks or outside of town altogether! There wasn’t really any formalized education available for rural residents until well into the 20th century! In 1861, while attending a meeting with other local landowners about forming a township, Captain John Witherspoon donated 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present day Elm Street and north of Market Square to become Darien Township! This donation marked the beginning of what would be called “the village movement” as more and more citizens began moving into this newly created township limits! By 1870, there were already over 100 residents living in Darien! While much has changed since 1870 whenDarien became an incorporated community, some key aspects have remained consistent such as its location within Northwestern Illinois; its close proximity to Carbondale; its strong Irish heritage; its commitment to educational opportunities for all citizens; and its tight-knit community spirit!.
