In 1892, the first firearms manufacturing company in Darien was established. The company produced revolvers and shotguns. In 1911, the company changed its name to National Firearms Manufacturing Company and began producing rifles. In 1921, the company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Corporation. In 1970, Winchester-Winchester Corporation merged with Remington Arms Company to form Remington Rand Corporation. From 1971 until 1978, Remington Rand Corporation produced pistols and ammunition under the name of Colt American Firearms Corporation. From 1978 until 1984, Colt American Firearms Corporation produced handguns under the name of Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc. from 1984 until 1990 when it became part of defense contractor Raytheon Co., Incorporated. From 1990 until 1998, Colt American Firearms Corporation produced rifles under the banner of Smith & Wesson Holding Corp.. This lasted for two years when it was replaced by Springfield Armory Corp.. On September 28th 2006 Springfield Armory Corp introduced a new rifle line called The New Generation which is a direct replacement for Smith & Wesson's current products lineup

The town was named after the settler who first arrived there in 1818. The Darien Manufacturing Company was founded in 1861 by Edward Hinkle and others. In 1865, it became one of the largest cotton textile companies in America. In 1876, John Prentice bought the company and changed its name to Phelps-Dodge Incorporated (PHD). HD became one of the leading American petrochemical companies through its production of fuels and plastics such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride). In 1984, Phelps-Dodge merged with Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) to form British Petroleum plc. HD continued to be an important player in American chemical industry until it merged with Koch Industries in 2013 to form BP plc.
Darien was founded by John Jacob Astor in 1837. The town was named after his father, who had given it land. Darien became a railroad junction in 1853 and played an important role in the growth of the Midwest. In 1871, the town became a city and was renamed Darien after its incorporation into the City of Chicago.
