Darien is a town in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,993 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Darien was Nicholas G. Kiley who arrived on October 15, 1837. The town was organized on November 3, 1847 by a group of men from Decatur and Aurora Township. It became a city on December 11, 1870. In 1957 the City of Darien granted its citizens voting rights which they had not enjoyed since before the Civil War. On January 1, 1960 Darien's incorporation as a city made it one of only two cities in Illinois without charter amendment to do so; the other being Peoria. On July 16, 1970 the City Council voted to annex unincorporated areas of Macomb County including portions of Darien and Riverview Heights making it an official city with full powers and resources like those enjoyed by Chicago and Cook County ILs The history of Darien begins with Nicholas Gasley who settled there in 1837 along what would become Water Street today. He named his land for his father-in-law (and future Congressman) John Fenton who also settled there that year according to local legend but no record has been found confirming this claim either from Gasley or Fenton himself . At some point around 1840 or 1850 several families started moving into what is now Old Town Square - near where Market Street meets Fifth Avenue - after finding land available free from rent or mortgage interest fees during the Jacksonian regime . George Washington Carver moved into this area soon after becoming famous for his work at Crystal Lake Agricultural Company west of town . With more people living closer together things got pretty socialized among these early settlers with streets laid out like Main Street (then State Road), Elm Streets (now Cass Ave), Agency Road (later US Highway 12), and Cutler Roads (now Hunting Green Rd).
