When the American Civil War began, much of Illinois was in Union hands. However, by 1862, the Union had taken over all of Illinois and most of Missouri as well. The ammunition industry in Darien sprang up to meet the needs of these new northern allies. In 1861, General George B. McClellan ordered a military expedition into Indiana to capture Fort Dearborn and its arsenal at Indianapolis. The fort’s supplies were a major source of munitions for the Confederate army. In order to prevent this from happening, skirmishes took place around Indianapolis between Union and Confederate forces on April 12th and 14th. On April 18th, Confederate forces attacked an artillery battery along the Delaware River near Waterloo. This attack resulted in one man being killed and four wounded; however, no damage was done to the fortifications or cannons. On May 3rd, 1861, Congress passed a resolution authorizing President Abraham Lincoln to arm all citizens who could provide them with arms “for his defense against insurrection and invasion” without providing any financial compensation. This resolution also allowed for the purchase of cannon fodder from civilians if needed in order to fight the Confederacy militarily. As part of this legislation, Representative John Alesi offered $5 per barrel for artillery rounds for use by Union troops during their Invasion of Maryland (May 14-18). The first shipment of ammunition arrived in Darien on October 15th from New York City via canalboats loaded with gunpowder and shot bought by Colonel John Paine from Revolutionary War veterans at auction in Philadelphia on September 25th (see below). At this time there were only 6 local shops supplying ammunition nationally with 1 ton/day delivered direct to Springfield Armory where it was converted into cartridges using coke ovens before being Loaded onto wagons for delivery elsewhere (Davenport 1885a). There were also several small companies that supplied fireballs rather than bullets as projectiles since they could not compete with large manufacturing concerns such as Winchester & Co., Remington Arms Company & others who produced cartridge shells weighing upwards 20 lbs each which required 5 men wearing masks while loading & unloading boats at Lock Haven Landing – today known as Lock Haven Harbour . These smaller companies did have some success though when they managed to get hold of larger quantities which led eventually to their becoming national firms like Winchester Ammunition Corporation which became world-renowned for their products

A group of them led by Pieter Conte established a farmstead on what is now Main Street near present-day Union Station in 1789. By 1800, most of what is now eastern Darien had been developed as farms and village center began to grow along with trade between villages along both sides of the river for goods such as lumber and corn
