Darien Township was organized in 1827. The original plat of Darien Township (dated November 3, 1827) included a square mile of land bounded by the present-day state lines of Illinois and Indiana. The first town meeting in what is now Darien Township was held on January 7, 1830. At that meeting, John Denton was elected moderator and Charles Stephenson were chosen as trustees for the new township. The first schoolhouse, which stood on the corner of State Street and Moultrie Road, was built in 1830. In 1834, Indian Reservations were set up within the township and it became a part of Kickapoo County. In 1844, Darien Township was renamed to Fox River Township after Major General James Fenton Fox who had been general at the Battle of Buena Vista Creek. In 1896, Fox River Township merged into neighboring Rockford Township so that all township trustees could be appointed from one organization. In 1912, Rockford Township separated from Fox River Township and formed its own government with a mayor-council form of government.
