Danville is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Danville was Isaac Sprague in 1824. Sprague and his family built a log cabin on the present site of Danville High School on October 17, 1825. In 1830, John Knowles founded a small farm at current-day Union Station and named it after himself, Daniel Welles Lane (1801-1872). In 1836, Samuel Morse founded Western Illinois Normal University in Danville and named it after himself, Samuel Morse College. In 1847/48, John Atherton platted land to the east of Union Station on which he built Atherton Grove Methodist Episcopal Church (now First Congregational United Church of Christ). On December 1st of that year by order from the General Assembly of Illinois an act was passed “An Act for founding and settling a Township in Cook County” with platting instructions to name it “Danville” after Captain Elijah Danforth (1792-1865), one of its earliest settlers who had contributed much to early exploration and settlement in this region. The first post office opened in Danville on January 1st of 1870 under the name “Elijahsburg” but changed its name to “Danville” due to objections from other towns within Cook County where their post offices were called something other than their original namesakes! In 1896 James Crain became mayor when incumbent Mayor William Hickey resigned; City Council members George Tully and Willis Nichols also served as councilors during this time period. On November 3rd 1897 according to village records James Crain became president pro tem for Village President Augustus Storrs Clarke through an act passed by the village council amending an ordinance adopted February 14th 1895 providing for electioninating officers; such officers serve until they are replaced by another candidate appointed by village president with written notice given two weeks before election date; at which time any unexpired term begins anew….James Crain continued serving as Village President until his death on May 4th 1906….. After James Crain's death AssistantVillagePresidentJohn Daley took over as Village President until 1910 when Edward Payson became ActingVillagePresident following Sheriff Harry Jorgensen's retirement…..Following World War II there were several changes take place within the community including increasing commuting distances between villages along I-88 resulting in almost all villages being consolidated into one larger municipality known today as Chicago; however Danville remained separate until 1984 when both municipalities merged into one single government entity renamed today asIllinoisCityofChicago!
