Danville is a city in central Illinois, United States. The population was 24,816 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to the Danville University campus. The city was founded on December 13, 1821 by George Stephenson as a post office called Danville after General Daniel Van Buren's attack on Fort Dearborn in what is now Michigan. The two were identical in name, but different in location: Stephenson's Danville was on the east side of the river Orleans near what is now Loop 610 South and Interstate 55, while Van Buren's Danville was located on the west side of the river Ottawa near what are now I-PASS lanes and State Route 131. In 1827, Stephenson donated land to create a town square that would house courthouse and jail; these buildings still stand today. In 1830, Congress passed an act providing for a town site on the east bank of the River Orleans for Danville; this Act also provided for water supplies from the Chicago River. The first town meeting took place on July 6, 1830 at which time it voted to change its name to "Danville". By February 9, 1831, all present had resigned from their previous townships or lines joining them therewith over differences with commissioners appointed thereto by Congress; thus by May 3rd 1831 the new town proper had been chartered with incorporation under that name. After initial growth due to wagon trade between Illinois and Indiana via Buffalo Bayou (now known as Kedzie Avenue), industry soon arrived when two railways came through Danville – Union Pacific Railroad (UP) in 1865 and Chicago & Northwestern Railway (C&N) in 1870–71. Coal mining followed shortly afterwards until about 1920 whenDanVILLE went electric with its own power plant built by Edison Brothers Electric Company; during prohibition many businesses closed because few could afford prohibition taxes before repeal). However much later several large businesses reopened including Jiffy Lube Cleaners & Rubber Co., Pillsbury Doughboy Bake Shop Inc., Englewood Clothes Mart #1 & 2, Applebees restaurant and more recently Villa Italiana restaurant which has become one of largest Italian restaurants outside Chicago area

It was founded in 1824 by Peter Danforth and named for him. In 1865, Danville became an independent city and has since grown into one of the largest cities in Kane County with over 25,000 residents. The history of Danville goes back to 1824 when Peter Danforth founded the village of Danville on a tract near what is now Carbondale. He named it for his home country, Denmark. The village had a population of just 10 people when it was founded. By 1830, however, there were over 100 people living in Danville. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Danville became an independent city under its own government. It remained that way until 1985 when it merged with Carbondale to form the current metropolitan area known as Carbondale-Danville-Moline (CDM). This merger was part of an effort to reduce commuter travel between CDM and greater Chicago while still maintaining some degree of local control over day-to-day operations within each community. Today, Danville is one of Southern Illinois' most vibrant cities with a diverse economy based on healthcare services; manufacturing; education; transportation; and retail trade among others. Its attractions include two major shopping malls - The Mall at Millikin University & Sears opened in 1984 and continues today as one of Southern Illinois' top tourist destinations; as well as several smaller shopping venues such as Park Plaza Shopping Center and Old Hickory Farms Shopping Plaza which are located close to downtownDanville.
Danville was founded in 1814 by Daniel Van Dyke. The town became a railroad town in 1868, and the first subway was built in Danville in 1913. The city is home to the Danville Teachers' Union and the Danville Arts Council.
