The first post office in Danville was established on May 3, 1849, by George Washington Hardin with Wm Pope as its first postmaster. At that time there were nine mailboxes scattered throughout downtown Danville with one mailbox located east of State Street between First Avenue and Congress Street; one mailbox located northwest corner of Second Avenue between Michigan Boulevard and Elmira Road; two mailboxes located southwest corner of Third Avenue between State Street and Elmira Road; three mailboxes located northwest corner of Fourth Avenue between Michigan Boulevard and Elmira Road; one mailbox located northeast corner of Third Avenue between Michigan Boulevard and Elmira Road; one mailbox located southwest corner OF Fourth Avenue between Michigan Boulevard and Elmira Road which had been moved from its original location to its current location about 1850s due to problems with wind patterns). In 1865, the first telegraph line linking Chicago with Springfield started operation through Danville providing communication for farmers along what is now I-280/I-88 corridor.
