Danville, Illinois is a town in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Danville is located in the east-central part of the state. It is bordered by Carbondale to the south, Galesburg to the west, and Aurora to the north. The first permanent settler in Danville was John Prentice who arrived in 1812 from Norfolk England. Other early settlers included Isaac Fenton and his family who arrived around 1814 and Elijah Dixon who came in 1816. By 1830 there were over 100 residents living in Danville. The first schools were established here in 1827 with six students attending school on a one-room log cabin into which they transported their food from home. In 1830 a school house was erected on present day Elm Street near corner of Washington Avenue and Third Street. This structure served as both a schoolhouse and post office until it burned down in 1865 due to weather damage. In 1837 George Stephenson built a sawmill on what is now Elm Street just east of First Road which soon became an important economic center for the area due to its availability of lumber and other resources needed for construction throughout central Illinois during that time period. However, this mill closed by 1860 due to competition from larger mills elsewhere within central Illinois.. During the 1840s Daniel Webster began working as an editor for "The Springfield Republican" newspaper before moving on to become Editor-in-Chief of "The Chicago Tribune" later that year where he remained until his death in 1896.. When America entered World War I (1914–18) Danville became one of four towns within Macon County authorized by General Order No 1 (GO1) dated October 15th 1915 “To provide necessary military forces for local defense” while all other county officials were ordered not to render any services or support without specific prior notification through their respective governor or commander general.. After World War I ended there was continued industrial growth with businesses such as A & W Brewery being founded along with many others during this time including Sears Roebuck & Co., Armour Steel Works, Alfred Sloan Company etc… however these businesses failed during the Great Depression (1929–33). During this time many people left Danville for rural areas such as Carbondale or Galesburg because of joblessness and lack of opportunity.. Danville experienced another significant industrial growth when oil production began occurring nearby starting around 1920 although it did not reach levels seen during earlier times until about 1930 when production reached 2 million barrels/day according to company records Additionally numerous small businesses sprang up such as repair shops etc… these also failed during the Great Depression but resumed thereafter . After World War II some new development took place with several new housing developments becoming available including: Northwoods Estates (later renamed Willowbrook), Apple Valley Estates etc…. however most developed properties declined following increased suburban development outside of town .. In recent years much redevelopment has occurred with several new high rise buildings being constructed along Elm Street near First Road including One Van Ness Place which replaced an older building dating back to 1907

Danville is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 33,681 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of DuPage County. Danville was founded on October 14, 1834 by General James K. Polk and his staff as a small log cabin community named "Polk's Prairie". The name "Danville" was given to the town by Captain John Fisk of the USS Constitution who reported seeing "a pure white light over [the] heads of all situated around us", which he thought signified the coming of a new day in America. The first post office in Danville opened on November 12, 1834. In 1835, General James K Polk made an appearance in Danville and gave the town its first charter – one that lasted for only six years because Polk resigned from office before it could be ratified. The original town plat showed three blocks of land with a house on each corner; today these are still visible as part of downtown Danville. In 1840, General James K. Polk again visited Danville and this time pronounced it "Danvilleshire." A second charter was obtained for the town on December 5th this time lasting 10 years until 1857 when it was revoked due to financial troubles caused by heavy goldmining activity nearby ( subsequently called Polks Mining District). At that point most of what is now downtown Danville developed as businesses grew up around what were then just two streets: Hull Street and Main Street which ran east-west through downtownDanville. During Reconstruction following World War I much business activity moved out westward into Chicago but many people continued to live and work in downtown Danville including Mayor George Nichols until his death at age 85 in 1951; later that year he was buried at Elmwood Cemetery next door to former Mayor Harry Siever ( after whom Hull Street became known). As early as 1923 local historian Julius Kingsbury described DowntownDanVILLE as being "…one continuous string or thread running nearly north and south along Hull street from First National Bank down to Elmwood Cemetery." In 1964/1965 photographs were taken showing how much progress had been made since those days with driveways being built between First National Bank building east side and old Masonic Temple west side - giving danvilians their present location within their current limits
Danville was first settled in 1829. The town was named after General Danville, who fought in the War of 1812. In 1837, the village of Danville became a city and was renamed for George Washington. The city was incorporated as a city in 1903.
