The first white settler in what would become Danville was James Waddell who arrived in 1853 from Kentucky with his family. By 1860 there were five families living in what became Danville. A year later construction began on the first courthouse which was completed in 1863. The town grew rapidly thanks to its strategic location midway between Carbondale and Peoria on the Butterfield Road which allowed for easy trade with those two cities. In 1916, when Carbondale and Danville merged to form one municipality, they each had an own mayor and council members but shared a single Police Department which functioned as both municipalities’ police department until 1964 when it became part of the Peoria Police Department under Mayor John Hynes. Danville has been home to many famous people including former President George H.W Bush (1948-1993), basketball superstar Julius Erving (1937-1998), singer/songwriter Neil Diamond (1947-2013), baseball player Rick Sutcliffe (1963-present) and entrepreneur Vinod Khosla (1974-present). The city also hosted the U2 concerts during their " promotional world tour" in 1987 and 2009 while they were still unsigned artists! Danville was founded by the Danville tribe of Native Americans in 1763. The area that is now Danville was first hunted for food by the Cahokia group of natives, who then traded with the French. In 1802, a group of English farmers named John Colborne and his brother-in-law, James Kapp, landed on the shore of Lake Michigan and started to settle what is now Danville. In 1818, John Quincy Adams became President of the United States and ordered General Andrew Jackson to move US troops out of Missouri so that he could build a canal there. When Jackson found out about this order, he told his generals to stay put and built a fort at Cairo instead. However, when Congress learned about this Fort Cairo development, they passed a bill ordering General Jackson to move all US military forces out of Illinois before summer turned into winter. After learning about this order from General Jackson himself, they pardoned all the soldiers in Illinois and renamed it Danville after him. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location as well as its connections with other towns in central Illinois. By 1829, it had over 1,000 residents and was building churches and schools as well as creating businesses such as banks and hotels. It also began hosting agricultural fairs which led to further growth in the town. By 1850, Danville had reached 2,500 residents and had begun annexing neighboring farms for itself. In 1870s it annexed another nearby farm which made it up to 4 square miles in size! By 1915Danville had grown up enough that it incorporated as a Village consisting of only 100 citizens! TodayDanville remains an important community with strong ties to its history – both past and present!
