Danville, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,412 at the 2000 census. Danville is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1836 as "Davenport," after the then-nascent town of Davenport, Iowa. In 2006,the city announced plans to construct a $160 million business park adjacent to Interstate 95 near its terminal airport revenue hub; this project would create up to 50 new jobs and several thousand square feet of office space downtown Today, Danville is known for its large number of quality restaurants and nightlife options including two amusement parks – Six Flags Great America (formerly Schlitterbahn) and iVillage – along with numerous medical facilities including Northwestern Memorial Hospital & Weill Cornell Medical Center
Danville was founded in 1824 by Nathan Dane and his brother, Josiah. It was named for Danville, Wisconsin, where Nathan had been born in 1795. In 1832, the town received its first post office. The population grew steadily until the late 1800s when it began to decline because of heavy-handed farming practices and transportation problems. After a period of growth in the early 1900s, Danville declined again through the 1920s and 1930s. The city's worst drought in over 100 years caused economic stagnation during the 1930s and 1940s; however, postwar growth brought new opportunities to Danville. In 1980,Danville became one of Illinois' two "City of Progress" towns; this distinction earned it national attention.
