Danville is a city in Danville Township, Knox County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Knox County. The area that now makes up Danville was first settled by Germans in 1815. In 1837, John Stephenson surveyed what would become Danville and named it after his friend Daniel Webster. By 1850, most of the land within present-day Danville had been surveyed and purchased by Richard Mathers for $4,000. Mathers built two small towns – Moline and Villa – on his land: Moline to the east and Villa to the west of where he lived. One account reports that when he died in 1860, all his property had been sold to pay off his debts. The growth ofDanville began with the construction of a railroad through central Illinois in 1872. The town became an important transportation center as railroads ran through it connecting Chicago with other parts of Illinois and Iowa. The economy changed dramatically during World War II when many new businesses were erected in Danville thanks to wartime production opportunities; however, these businesses failed during the postwar recession that followed World War II. After the war ended, business activity declined again until an economic revival began during the early 2000s led by new jobs available in information technology and sportswear companies such as Nike and Adidas.
