Danville is a town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Danville was Nicholas Flournoy on July 1, 1814. He and his family were pioneers who built a log cabin on the east side of the town now known as Old Danville. The first courthouse in Danville was erected in 1835 and it sat on the site of today's Union Station until 1865 when it burned down. In 1876, John Wertz platted what became downtown Danville and named it after himself - Wertz Place. In 1892, Daniel Giannini founded the Illinois Central Railroad here with trackage from Joliet to Rockford via Danville. The Giannini Company built three miles of track from downtown to their new station at Third Street and High Street by 1895-96 and opened service on October 7th that year. At its peak, the company had 16 locomotives including six Pullman cars carrying passengers north to Chicago or south to Peoria or Quad Cities; four baggage cars; a general store; hospital (now First HealthCare Center); carpenter shop; fire engine shed; restaurant (now Tower Tavern); and two sidings for freight trains running between Joliet/Rockford and Chicago en route to points east or west of Illinois city limits: one near present-day West Side Highway (I-465) exit 12A off I-465 next to Parkview Drive [on former Racine County Courthouse property], another just south of present day State Road 165 [at Riverside Avenue] off State Road 165 north of Loop 401 [in Nowhere Township]. This railroad continued operations into the 1920s under various names including "The Illinois Central" before being merged into Penn Central Railroad in 1947 which became Conrail following Railroads' collapse that year. DowntownDanville incorporated as a municipality on December 1st 1907 from parts of Northbrook Township[northwest side of Sangamon County] unincorporated areas along its tracks plus portions of Arlington Heights[northwest side of CookCounty], Glendale Heights[southcentral sideof CookCounty], Hoffman Estates[southeast cornerof CookCounty], Crystal City[southwestern edgeof Kane County], Garysburg[]and other nearby villages forming what would become one large town with an initial population size around 10,000 people due largely to industrial development taking place hereabouts during World War I followed by increased employment resulting from federal military barracks located nearby during Prohibition era days such as those found at Fort Sheridan [] later closed ] especially during 1946 through early 1949 when goods movement stopped abruptly due to Korean War exercises then resumed shortly thereafter following armistice hostilities ended Beginning in mid-1990sDanville began experiencing high levels (>50%) annually average rainfall making it one half inch higher than normal over short periods most often lasting several days creating numerous creek flooding events sometimes referred collectively as "the drought". Most recently beginning late 2009 through early 2010 significant flooding occurred again primarily due intense rainfall totals exceeding 50% annual average most notably affecting lower Main Creek which impacts much rural farmland adjacent thereto causing extensive damage particularly southeastern section thereof reaching upriver some 30 feet deep subsequent engineering efforts have since been undertaken including installation of sandbags beneath creek banks upstream impacts have generally ceased but stilloccur occasionally

After Reconstruction ended in 1865,Danville experienced rapid growth due to new industrialization initiatives spearheaded by Mayor James Molineux Sr., which included such innovations as heavy industry complexes like Armour Manufacturing Company (now United Technologies) and Phelps Dodge Corporation (Phelps Dodge). This technological innovation led to increased economic opportunities for both locals and workers alike – ultimately resulting in improved public services and infrastructure across all aspects of society including education (including central library), health care (including hospitals like Rush Medical Center), transportation (such as road systems that allowed easy access toChicago), marketing (such as promotion of local agricultural produce) and more! Today there are several museums located within or adjacent to downtown Danville showcasing various aspects of this rich cultural heritage including artesanal techniques used today by artisans such as quilters/veytchers/embroideryists; traditional breadmaking techniques using whole grains; African-American life inside prisons & jails during Reconstruction; early 20th centuryauto racing at Midway Park; etc.– making it one of America’s most vibrant cities!
