In 1955 Danville was designated an official suburb by then- Mayor John Gorrie along with nearby unincorporated communities Cooksfield Township and parts of Streamwood Township. That same yearDanville experienced its first major tornado outbreak when four homes were destroyed east side streets between Second Street South and First Street North due to wind gusts over 100 mph(160 km/h). Afterward many measures were taken to prevent such events from happening again including building stronger winds detectors throughout town as well as strict regulations on agricultural activities that could create tornadoes such as raising corn tallies high enough so they would be visible during storms
