Crystal Lake is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Crystal Lake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Crystal City name first appeared on maps in 1871. It was anglicized to its present spelling, Crystal Lake, in 1903 when an electrical company built a dam across the then- named creek. The first permanent settler in what would become Crystal Lake was George Wirtz, who arrived on May 10, 1871. He and his family were the first people to live permanently in what would become Crystal Lake. At that time it consisted of only two houses and a small meadow around them. In 1875 Wirtz donated land for a Baptist church and cemetery which now stands near the southern edge of town today as Wellesley Road east of I- Treasurer Road. By 1880 there were more than 100 families living here and by 1890 there were 400 residents living here full time with their own homes or stores/cities (Jenny's Store) being built soon thereafter). In 1893 an electric company built a dam across the then- named creek which made crystal clear water available for swimming and bathing This event forever changed this small community as it became one of Chicago's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its natural springs In 1903 the name change from "Crystal City" to "Crystal Lakes". In 1940 US president Franklin D Roosevelt visiting Illinois visited Crystal Lakes Casino Resort & Spa where he played blackjack during his visit . After playing poker with some of Chicago's top players FDR met Mayor Richard J Rooney who introduced him to local businessmen Harry Goldenell and Clarence Weisbrod who offered Roosevelt $10,000 worth of slots at their casino if he would campaign for mayoralty in 1942 . FDR accepted they offer but instead ran for Vice President that year becoming America’s 43rd president In 1946 Congressman William Fennelly announced plans to build a nuclear weapons plant on site but due to opposition from locals this proposal was scrapped however Fennelly never forgot about these events as he later served as Chairman of both state House & Senate Committees on Interstate Commerce In 1961 when Illinois solved its oil Crisis by exporting crude oil from Indiana Governor John Lindsay ordered all state government agencies stop accepting federal funding until regulations had been put into place limiting refineries capacity . After Illinois stopped accepting federal funding local companies picked up where state government left off by applying for millions in outside grants programs thereby stimulating economic growth within our community over the next few decades culminating with efforts by Mayor James Shields restoring public services including cleaning up abandoned factories etc .. Today many feel like history has not been properly written about our once thriving community as it continues to experience steady population growth despite recent attempts by developers to take it away

Crystal Lake was a small, crystal-clear lake in the Illinois area of Cook County. It is now a ghost town and census-designated place. The site of Crystal Lake was first settled by the Kankakee nation in the late 18th century and became part of the village of Crystal Lake after it was annexed by Chicago in 1871. The village developed around an amusement park, but it failed to gain popularity and was closed in 1984. The land that is now Crystal Lake became part of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County on November 1, 1988. The history of Crystal Lake began with its location within what is now suburban DuPage County. In 1847, John J. Cullerton donated 412 acres (182 hectares) to the Village of Crystal Lake as a gift for his wife Esther Cullerton and their son John Cullerton II. The Cullertons named their new town after themselves –Crystal Lake – and opened it to residents on December 12, 1851. At its height, the village had about 2,500 residents; however, it only lasted for two years because it struggled to attract tourists due to low wages paid by local businesses and high taxes levied by Chicago’s city government onerous property values. In 1865, when Chicago annexed all of Cook County including CrystalLake into city limits – which at that time included much more rural areas outside downtown Chicago –the village ceased operations completely. In 1924, developers bought land adjacent to CrystalLake from the original owners for $2 million dollars in order to create a new amusement park called “The World’s Fair Park” which would have been located on 165 acres (66 hectares). However, due to financial problems caused by bad publicity surrounding this project and other large tourist attractions opening up near downtownChicago at that time such as Wrigley Field),the park never came together and closed down in 1929 while still under development. After World War II ended there were plans for another amusement park called simply “The World’s Fair Park” but these plans also fell apart because no one could find backers or money for them whatsoevermainly because development restrictions placed upon buildings located close Downtown had not changed since 1920 when construction started on City Hall shortly before Chicagos incorporation as a city! Finally in 1948 developer Harry Weisenthal got interested in building what he thought would be an even larger second Worlds Fair Park if possibleon 5 different parcels adjoining existing State Street between South Skokie Avenueand West Douglas Avenuein Evanston IL; however these plans too never took offeither because weisenthal just couldn't get over how difficult it would be getting zoning approvals from various municipalities inside &outside Of ChicagosCity Limits! After many yearsOf fruitless dreams & research good old Harry died at home surrounded By His Family... endangered Species did finally take him instead!!! CrystalLake eventually reverted back to its natural state again following several decadesOf neglect until2002 when people who owned someof the land reacquired titleToIt From previousdeveloper's heirsAnd Started PLAYING WITH THE HISTORY AGAIN BY OPENING UP SOME OF THE LANDFROM BEFORE THEN TO PRESERVE IT AS A TOURIST SITE FOR VISITORS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE!!
Crystal Lake was originally a small, isolated community located on the eastern edge of Crystal Lake County. The community became a stop on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1881. In 1907, the railroad merged with the Illinois Central Railway, which made CrystalLake an important rail junction. The population of CrystalLake peaked at 770 in 1930, but declined after World War II. In the 1970s,CrystalLake began to experience growth as a result of new development around it. Today, CrystalLake has a population of about 3,000 people and is home to several businesses and schools.
