Crystal Lake is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Crystal Lake's history dates back to 1879 when three families from nearby Arlington Township laid out a small community on the banks of the clear-running Crystal River. The name "Crystal Lake" was given to the lake by Major General John P. Morgan who surveyed and named it after his home village in Ireland, Carrickfergus (Carrickfirgus). The first settlers in Crystal Lake were families from Arlington Township and their children who had come West during the American Civil War to help fight for Union forces. In 1916 an 86-acre tract of land north of town was bought by Edward Atherton who opened what is now known as Atherton Park Golf Course there. Atherton also built two homes: one now known as North Home Avenue and one located on Park Road which still stands today; both are historic landmarks within CrystalLake limits today. In 1926 Jameson Ford established a chemical works at Addison Road near present day Northwestern University that remain an important part of CrystalLake's economy to this day.
