Crystal Lake was founded in 1879 as a small community on the north side of Crystal Lake by John G. Hesselman and his brothers. The name likely comes from "crystal," meaning "clear" or "unclouded." Upon his return home he organized an ambulance corps which served throughout Europe until 1918 when he was honorably discharged because of his military obligations back home in America Crystal Lakes also saw its share of McCarthyism during this time; however it didn't have much impact on everyday life since almost everyone here knew what was going on without needing to be specific about it After World War II ended there wasn't really any big change taking place until 1960 when people started moving into what is now known as South End Village due to changes happening nationally within that decade dubbed "the suburban craze." At this point most people here lived close to work or had kids coming down for school so there wasn't really much opportunity for exploration or enjoying nature outside of walking or biking . But things slowly started changing again starting around 1984 with some new development taking place just east of town line nears Kankakee River eventually leading to South End Village becoming more popular than ever before
