Crestwood is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Crestwood was founded in 1837 by John Davenport and his wife Rebecca. The first post office in Crestwood was established on November 15, 1837, with Fayetteville as the mailing address. The first store opened in 1839 and the first school was built in 1840. The town charter was granted on January 6, 1841. In 1847 Crestwood had a population of around 100 people; however it declined to 50 by 1850 due to heavy migration from neighboring towns and villages into Crestwood proper due to its location on the border of two counties (Kane and Cook). In 1855 sugar beets were introduced into Crestwood by John Hargrave and they soon became an important crop for the town; however production only increased to 3 bushels per acre (lbs/acre) due to low rainfall during early years of their cultivation because sugar beet soils are very dry-adapted. By 1860 growth had resumed but at a slower pace than before; nevertheless 2 miles wide road connecting Crestwood with nearby village of Welland had been completed that year making it easier for goods and passengers to move around within the township or county without having to go through Welland or overriver Kankakee creek which formed its borders then as well as now. During this time also lumbering began operations starting out small but gradually increasing until there were about fifty sawmills operating in Crestwood between 1865-1870 inclusive producing 1600 tons/year mostly wooden boards for various buildings & furniture including churches & schools across Kane County as well as many other homes throughout Illinois & Wisconsin etc.; this activity generated several thousand dollars annually in local taxes alone not counting excise tax collected by governments along with these products exported back home….After 1870 when railroad transportation became available things changed drastically with mills becoming obsolete largely replaced by automated machines primarily used for wood chips rather than building materials….. Consequently much of what once constituted jobs associated with these industries have disappeared leaving little remaining evidence except for memories of men working long hours hand tools sharpening boards creating beautiful patterns on ancient hardwoods
