The village of Crestwood was founded in 1871 by John C. Myer and his wife Anna Caldwell with the goal of providing "a home for the less fortunate." In 1922, Crestwood became one of twelve townships in McLean County as a result of the Kentucky Plan; its residents were then granted voting rights. In 1969, Crestwood's high school—now called Prairie View A&M University—opened under a $10 million gift from Dr. James Ewing Jr., Sr., president emeritus of Prairie View A&M University and chairman emeritus ofthe Boardof Trustees for Illinois Central Railroad Company (ICR). At that time Prairie View A&M University was one among fifty-six colleges and universities participating in Federal ExpressCorporation's First Collegiate Athletics program which offered tuition free to students who attended participating institutions along with footballs, basketballs, baseballs and other sports teams from those schools playing NCAA Division I collegiate sports during that period. Seymour Siegel donated $1 million to open Mundelein High School on Arbor Drive adjacent to PVIU after his death in 1984; he had also given $500,000 each to Pace University (later renamed Northwestern) and DePaul University (later renamed Chicago State), making him one of the largest donors ever made to any single educational institution within Cook County at that time or any time thereafter..
