During World War II, Crestwood became an important military base due to its location close to the Midwest Theater of Operations. After the war, Crestwood experienced growth as a result of its role as an agricultural center. In recent years, Crestwood has become known for its nightlife and culture. Crestwood, Illinois is a town located in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Crestwood is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It was founded in 1847 by Andrew Jackson Dent and his brother-in-law George Armstrong Cropsey as a small village on the banks of the Fox River. In 1868 it became an incorporated town. Crestwood is named after two American Revolutionary War generals: John Adams Crestwood and Nathanael Greene Crestwood. The first post office in Crestwood was established on December 3, 1847, by Andrew Jackson Dent and George Armstrong Cropsey. The name of the town was chosen to honor General John Adams Crestwood (1755-1824), commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution who had distinguished himself at Saratoga and Yorktown. General crest wood's home still stands today across from the old post office building which currently houses a grocery store and several other businesses including a restaurant called "The Garden". In 1880, when Forrestal purchased 4200 acres (1 km²) east of Crestwood from Daniel Boone for $600 dollars he began developing what would become Forest Park – one of Chicago's most popular tourist destinations today. Forrestal renamed his new park after him – Forrestal Park in memory of his late friend and mentor Dr James Forrestal (1902-1978). In 1912, when another Chicago developer offered to sell 2 firefighter districts to CrestWood for $3 million cash – crest wood rejected that offer because it would have left their community without firefighting services for years to come! Crestwood has experienced many changes throughout its history including becoming an incorporated town in 1868; becoming an all-black city in 1964 following integration; being annexed into Oak Lawn Heights Township in 1978; experiencing rapid growth due to suburban sprawl beginning around 1990; becoming an independent municipality again following annexation by Lakeview Heights Township on November 3rd 2006; experiencing declines over recent years due to economic hard times before surging back again recently thanks to some exciting development projects targeting reviving downtown areas as well as new technology businesses that are moving into or expanding into downtown areas like BMO Harris Bradley Center along with numerous other businesses making this Historic Third Ward one of bustling vibrant neighborhoods once again!
