Crestwood was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States until the early 21st century. It is located in the Unincorporated areas of Cook County and is currently a census-designated place. The community began as a farmstead on the east side of Crestwood Road, west of present-day Meadowvale Drive. The first settler to arrive in Crestwood was John Morse who arrived around 1837. In 1881, the village was organized and named after General James O'Hara who fought for the United States during the Mexican–American War. After O'Hara's death, his widow ordered that all public buildings be renamed after him including Crestwood Village Hall which still stands today. In 1927, Crestwood lost its status as an unincorporated community and became part of the city of Chicago. On July 1, 1955, it annexed part of Deerfield Township which made it one municipality with a population over 10,000 people. On December 3rd of that year, Crestwood was designated as an historic district by Chicago Landmarks Commission due to its significant contributions to Illinois history such as being home to both Joffrey Bal Harbour and Hennepin Avenue Bridge (now La Salle Avenue bridge). Today CenturyLink Field is also located in Crest wood along with many other historically significance sites within its boundaries like Sohm’s Tavern which served as a detention center for African Americans during World War II and Forrest Gump Elementary School which opened in 1922 on what is now State Street near Cicero Avenue
Crestwood was founded in 1814 by Col. John H. Crestwood and his family. The first town meetings were held on July 24, 1814, and the first store was opened on October 1, 1814. In 1838, a post office was established at Crestwood with Wm. Prentice as the first mail carrier. The postmaster also served as the town clerk from 1830 to 1840. In 1865, the village of Crestwood merged with the township of Crestwood to form a new municipality. The name of the new municipality was changed to Crestwood Township in 1971 when it became a part of Cook County, Illinois. The township has had three mayors: Nellie Ladd (1892-1894), James Ahern (1902-1903), and Floyd Jernigan (1978-1981).
