Crestwood is known as the "Gun Toting Capital of America" and has been so since at least the mid 1800s. The first guns were brought to Crestwood by traders from nearby Chicago. By 1876, firearms had become an essential part of local militia drill and defense against Indian raids. In 1898, Congress passed the National Firearms Act which required all gun purchases to be done through licensed dealers. This led to a surge in weapon sales in Crestwood and other small towns across Illinois. Today, Crestwood remains home to one of the most vibrant gun businesses in America with over 150 retailers selling handguns and shotguns for both personal use and commercial purposes. Crestwood was founded in 1853 by Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his family. Crestwood was named for both its location on high ground and its resemblance to a wooded crest seen from a distance. Crestwood Today is one of the most liveable communities in Kane County with close-knit families and great schools that have helped keep Crestwood’s population growth steady over the years. The first post office opened in Crestwood on July 20, 1853. It was renamed Niles in 1861 after postal officials realized that many residents were calling the community "Crestwood". In 1892, Washington Furniture Company moved to Crestwood from Buffalo Grove and quickly became one of the town's most popular businesses. The company has been headquartered in Crestwood ever since. In 1903, local businessmen formed a group to build an electric railway between Joliet and Glen Ellyn which became known as the “CrestWOOD Electric Railway Company” because it lined up against a large field near where present day I-88 crosses Overland Road (now US Route 15). The company built its first line –asuring just 7 miles – from Ridgefield Park north to Mundelein before being bought out by Chicago Edison Company LLC in 1907 for $5 million dollars USD! At this time, CrestWOOD Electric Railway had also become known as “Illinois' First Electric Railroad” In 1916, when Illinois switched from horse-drawn carriages to buses for all state services under Governor John Fenton (later James P Kennedy), CrestWOOD Electric Railway transported passengers on two daily routes: North/Southwest/Eastbound at 5 p.m., and North/Westbound at 3 p.m.. On December 14th of that year Presto Bus Lines Inc., parent company of Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) took control of both companies providing service into downtownChicago through Rush Street Tunnel using new fleet buses purchased by CSTA On May 2nd 1947 Union Carbide Corporation announced their intent to purchase CSTA for $175 million dollarsUSD making it possible for them to take over all bus operations within Cook County including CRESTWOOD ELECTRIC RAILROAD COOPERATIVE . On October 6th 1947 Union Carbide Corporation made their final payment totaling $236 million USD giving them complete ownership of CPSU SUBWAY SYSTEMS INC . This acquisition gave CRESTWOOD ELECTRIC RAILROAD COOPERATIVE access not only to suburban Routes 71 & 73 but also downtown Chicago making it possible for people living within walking distance of our stations to experience transit service they could not otherwise access

The early 21st century has seen some significant changes take place within Crestwood – over recent decades it has experienced several waves of population growth which have led to increased traffic congestion and budget shortages inside the community itself. However, despite these challenges – which have taken their toll on many aspects of life for residents – overall stock prices for local businesses are still high enough that many people continue to live here fulltime while maintaining close ties with their families back home.
The community of Crestwood, Illinois was founded by Methodists in 1847. The population of Crestwood was 1,500 at the time of its founding. In 1850, the community became a post office and developed into a small town with a population of around 2,000. In 1907, Crestwood was renamed for John H. crestwood who donated land to the town. The first settlers in Crestwood were Methodist missionaries from Kentucky who arrived in 1847 and built two churches and started a school.
