Crestwood is a small town in Livingston County, Illinois, United States. It was founded on the east bank of the Chicago River in 1836 by Abram Bechtel and his family. The name "Crestwood" is derived from the German word "Kestrel," meaning "a Falcon." Crestwood was first settled by Germans who were moving westward during the 1830s. In 1839, Abram Bechtel purchased land from the Potawatomi Nation and began to build a mill on the river. The town grew rapidly, and by 1861 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1876, George Washington Carver bought land in Crestwood and began to grow corn there. The town prospered until the Great Chicago Fire destroyed most of downtown Chicago in 1871. After reconstruction efforts failed, many Germans left Crestwood for other towns in Illinois or Ohio during the late 19th century. Some remained but some moved into large white houses along State Street which remain standing today as part of Crestwood's commercial district. By 1930 only about 10% of Crestwoods residents still spoke German as their first language; most residents now speak English fluently or primarily Spanish as their second language. Most businesses are now multi-language affairs with both English and Spanish versions available online or through phone calls/texting services. The termination of World War II led to an increased demand for gun slings among Americans throughout much of 1945–1946; however, few slings were made until after American troops returned home from war(). Production resumed after President Harry Truman signed legislation authorizing production of such devices following his inauguration in January 1947 (). Crestwood grew up around the railroad station and dairy farm that are now part of the village. The first settler in Crestwood was John Pritchard, who came to the area in 1846. In 1860, Augustus Kelley bought a farm in Crestwood from Pritchard. In 1866, John Fenton purchased a farm from Kelley and named it Crestwood after his home town of Creston on Lake Michigan. By 1870, all of eastern Kane County had been annexed by Chicago; Crestwood remained rural until after World War II when it began an accelerated growth process which has continued to this day. In 1902, A&P grocery store was built on Forest Road in Crestwood; this became one of the largest grocery stores in Chicago and its successor companies remain prominent today. One notable resident during this time period was entrepreneur Harry Crane who co-founded WGN radio with Charley Kilborn before becoming its first president in 1922. Another earlyresident was Jock Mahony who also founded The Herald newspapers which are still published today as part of Hearst Newspapers group The Village Council established a fire Department on November 15th 1925 and constituted their first Board of Directors including future Mayor Paul Manger On December 3rd 1928 another meeting took place to create Village Manager position On December 9th 1928 Harry Crane died suddenly leaving his wife Mildred with 4 children under the age of 10 years old plus 8 year old son John (Harry's brother) Jr., all alone with no health insurance or other support system available to them widowless After more than two years without any effective leadership or decision-making power within ourVillage we went into receivership on January 16th 1930s The receiver appointed Mrs Lillian Frye as our newVillage Manager effective February 17th 1930under her direction we started making some decisions again We elected Dr James Egan as our newMayorJanuary 7th 1933 Our lastelected mayor Mr Jock Mahonywas reelectedMarch 4ths 1933 he resigned due to term limits

Crestwood was organized by the Illinois Eastern Railroad in 1868. The first train arrived in Crestwood on October 3, 1868. Crestwood was named after the ridges of trees that can be seen in the town.
