Crestwood, Illinois is a small town located in the eastern portion of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Crestwood is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community began as a small farming village in 1871 and was incorporated as a city on November 1, 1965. It lies within the limits of the University Park neighborhood on Chicago's Near West Side. The first settlers to Crestwood were farmers who arrived from Ohio in 1871. They built their homes near the river and planted corn, wheat, and potatoes. In 1912, when Crestwood became an incorporated city, it had just under 2 thousand residents. Today it has a population of around 10,000 people and maintains its rural feel with many acres of forested land that are used for hunting and fishing. Crestwood's history can be traced back to 1871 when three men named John Daugherty Sr., James Daugherty Jr., and Owen Duffy founded a small farming village called Dunlopstown on the banks of the Des Plaines River about fourteen miles west of Chicago. The village grew quickly due to its location close to water resources and its access to markets for food products such as flour and beans. In 1875, Dunlopstown received municipal status which allowed it to build schools, churches, businesses (including one woolen mill), an ordnance store (later known as Hinshaw's Hardware), a post office (founded by Captain George Hinshaw Jr.), public baths (opened in 1886), and other civic amenities. "The growth [of Dunlopstown] can be attributed largely to agriculture; while manufacturing also contributed significantly." By 1910 there were over fifty businesses open inDunlopstown with employment totaling 100-300 workers per day including two woollen mills producing cloth for export from Dunlopstown’s large yard which could accommodate up to sixty looms at once! In 1916 Mayor Joseph Pappas convened what is now known as the "First Municipal Election" which saw incumbent Mayor Daniel Jaffe defeated by City Councilman John Ahern by 6 votes! This event marks what is considered today as Crestwood’s first political victory! After being defeated by Ahern on election night 1916Duffy moved his family from Dunlopstown back into his home country cottage where they continued agricultural production until he sold his farm in 1949! From 1925 through 1961 almost all mail passed through Ridgebrook Post Office before moving downriver along State Street via boat dock until finally arriving at our current stop at Old National Bank across Ryan Boulevard just east of I-94! At this time much mail still traveled via horse drawn wagons or stagecoach service!" .... During these years not only did villagers benefit from good farmland but also new industries sprang up providing jobs for local citizens including: An early branch bank opened in 1915 which served bothDunlapostofficeandthevillage;the foundingofanewhigh schoolin1925whichnowserves elementary students alongside high schoolers; establishmentofapower plantin1932whichprovides energy for house heating; constructionofthefirstlocal hospital(nowVet)andahospitalsuchasStritch Hospital;anddevelopmentofthefirstvineyardin1945". Although some industries closed during World War II due to lack of war surplus materials or competition from larger towns like Evanston or Oak Brook IL those that survived experienced rapid growth during postwar decades thanks in part to new tax breaks given unto companies such as Chrysler Corporation who set up shop here after leaving Detroit Michigan during prohibition era). postwar growth halted following repeal OF Prohibition however restarted following VEET closures In 1980 crestwood had reached 10K+ residents
