In 1827, Job Crandall's son-in-law George Murchison donated 3 acres (1 km²) of land to the town. The first courthouse was built in 1830 on what is now Main Street. In 1851, John Davenport donated 1 acre (0.4 km²) of land north of Main Street for use as a public square. This area became known as "Davenport Square." The first school was established in 1852 on what is now First Street near the current post office building. In 1862, Crestwood lost its incorporation as a village because it did not have enough residents to support an election petition drive required by statute under then- Village charter §5/2(a). On July 15, 1865, Crestwood merged with neighboringtowns Mayflower and Beech Grove over objections from both towns' leaders; this merger created the new village of Crestwood with a population of 705 residents at its incorporation date.
