In 1962 Crestwood Elementary School reopened after being closed for many years due to allegations of misbehavior by some students from nearby Park Ridge Elementary School. In 1984 Crestwood High School opened with new facilities following renovations funded by private donations from local businesses and individuals who felt that high school education should not be based primarily on test scores or grades received at public schools but rather would reflect character development skills developed throughω

In 1865, Hickey imported 150 acres (60 hectares) of forestland to create Crestwood Park which became one of the most popular recreational areas in the city of Chicago. In 1876, with construction beginning on what would become Northwestern University's campus at now-Vincennes University Park in northwest suburban Elmhurst, Crestwood grew rapidly due to new industrial development along the Chicago River near its center. By 1900, there were more than 2dozen businesses including five banks and twenty-five schools including Northwestern College (now Northwestern University). With race riots erupting throughout much of America during that decade following Reconstruction efforts to end slavery in America through military emancipation policies known as " Grant's Law ", Crestwood experienced black unrest for only a brief period before returning to normalcy by 1901 when whites took back control of local government and education institutions. " Crest wood has always been closely identified with education; it has been central to many people who have lived here," explained historian Don Ritchie . "Many people who have made their mark here are buried deep within these walls." With steel production moving westward into Indiana following World War I , Crestwood lost some residents and businesses but regained nearly all its residents by 1920 when Northwestern opened its doors once again for students seeking higher learning outside the city limits restrictions that had kept college out of reach for too many while also making it prohibitively expensive for most urbanites to afford such opportunities on their own terms.
