Crestwood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,693 at the 2010 census. Crestwood is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and it is located on the southern border of Cook County. It is bordered by Skokie to the north, Downers Grove to the east, Westchester to the south and Lake Forest to the west. The township was organized on December 4, 1831 from portions of heavy farm land around Mount Prospect which had previously been part of what is now Winnetka Township. The first post office was established in 1836 and was named Mount Prospect. The name changed to Crestwood in 1868 when a railroad was built through town and several stores were opened. At its peak as a manufacturing center during World War II with aircraft production beginning in 1942, Crestwood employed over 10,000 people. After that time decline began until current levels of employment are seen today due largely to retirees or those who have moved away from Crestwood since then. As time passed and more people began moving into Crestwood from other parts of Illinois and Wisconsin, it began to grow increasingly popular among these new arrivals. By 1910 there were over 100 residents living in town – this number increased by 50% during World War I when many local soldiers served abroad. After World War I ended and demand for housing decreased across Cook County due to new technologies becoming available, business owners decided that they would rather move their businesses away from downtown Chicago than face competition from larger buildings located near Soldier Field or Lake Shore Drive. This decision led to the decline of Crestwood's economy over time; however, it still retains some importance today because much of its workforce comes from nearby suburbs such as Chi-town or Oak Lawn (which are both within minutes' drive).
