Crestwood is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the only village in McLean County. Crestwood was platted in 1872 by Charles W. Goodrich and his son-in-law, George Prentice. The name comes from a now lost Indian tribe and their village of Crane Hill on the southeast side of Chicago, which Goodrich had encountered while exploring the area in 1848. The first post office opened in 1875 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1911. In 1896, Crestwood built its first school house which remains standing to this day and has been used as a community center ever since. In 1907, Crestwood implemented an electric streetcar system that served the entire village for $1 per ride (equivalent to $ at current prices). At that time power came from three Edison generators set up near the edge of town on forest land donated by Charles Wirths Sr., who also founded what is now Beech Brook Academy School District #2A (now part of Champaign–Urbana School District). In 1985, Crestwood became one of twenty townships within Mclean County organized through the merger of several smaller villages into one entity under the leadership of then-Governor Bruce Rauner. Crestwood has grown steadily since then with annexations from other municipalities including Villa Park to the east and West Dundee to the south; all without losing its unique character or identity as an independent village located within Mclean County

Crestwood was founded in 1868 by George Washington Custis and his wife, Nannie Tombaugh. The first post office in Crestwood was established on November 3, 1868. The name of the town was changed to Crestwood on December 5th of that year after local residents voted to change it from an unnamed village to honor George Washington Custis and Nannie Tombaugh. In 1870, there were only 8 settlers living in Crestwood with a total land value of $5 contributed by George Washington Custis and his wife Nannie Tombaugh. By 1880, there were over 100 people living in Crestwood with a total land value of $100+. In 1890, Crestwood had 2 stores and 4 blacksmiths. Interstate 80 crossed through Crestwood just south of its limits making it difficult for businesses to remain open as drivers passed through without stopping or giving customers time to purchase goods. The community sued the state for damages caused by I-80 but lost every court case until 1978 when they finally won their case against I-80 which allowed them to resume normal business operations. In 1951, crest wood annexed part of Oak Lawn Township creating what is now known as Forest Park Road east of I-80/I- 79/US 41 (Forest Park Road). In 1957 two new high schools were built; one being named Lincolnshire High School while the other became Grant Elementary School (now Douglas Elementary School) which annexation made possible due to factors such as limited space at Lincolnshire High School and lack of funding for new school construction projects across Cook County during this time period. It wasn't until 1978 when crest wood finally won their case against I-80 which allowed them to resume normal business operations
