Crestwood is a town located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 10,619 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Crestwood was founded in 1871 by donations from local farmers and Merchants Bank directors, who hoped to create a center for agricultural production and trade within the expanding city of Chicago. The town's first store opened in 1875 and its first post office in 1877. By 1905, Crestwood had a population of 2,680 and it began to grow rapidly due to its location on the edge of new suburbs being developed around the city. In 1925, Crestwood became one of two townships (the other being Maycomb Township) within Cook County that were created as result of the creation of suburban areas outside of Chicago. During World War II, Crestwood became an early supporter of American military efforts and donated land to the United States Military Air Forces Base Aurora (now Aurora Municipal Airport). In 1945–46, Crestwood collaborated with Maycomb Township officials in developing plans for what would become known as Cicero-Maycomb Boulevard which would connect Cicero with mayhewoods on the south side of Cicero Road. This project was successfully completed in 1948 and remains one of Interstate 90's longest unsigned freeways

In 1862–1863, Rev Fenton Prentice conducted an evangelical revivalISM campaign that led to a large influx of Protestants into Crestwood from surrounding villages including North Chicago and Villa Park In 1865–1866, John Cockerill erected a sawmill on the east side of town which remains one of Crestwood's most prominent landmarks today In 1898–1900, Chester Boles built a dam across the Belcher River giving Crestwood water supply for its own development In 1907–1908, Harold Haggerty constructed what is now known as Haggerty Park across from where he lived while running his lumber business From 1909 through 1912 there were four administrations: Mayor George Wohlgemuth; Superintendent Jens Leroy Weikert; Trustee Julius Kapp ; elected with no more than three percent support regardless of party affiliation mayors were not allowed to serve consecutively without obtaining prior approval from the board (This prohibition expired on April 12th 1915) In 1916-1917 Forrest Sherman conducted an agricultural experiment at Griggs Station yielding results indicating early vegetables might be grown here but this did not gain favor with residents so fulltime farming operations began about 1922 After World War I ended many men returned home looking for jobs so by 1919 total population had dropped to 856 people

From 1920-1950, Barrington had a total population of 320 residents. The growth of Barrington went hand-in-hand with the growth of agriculture in Crestwood; during this time there were increased numbers of mills, which produced jeans and other clothing products for export to Europe and other parts of the world. After World War II ended, however, production declined while farms closed down; by 1970 only 1% of Barrington’s workforce still worked on agricultural jobs compared to over 50% when industrial jobs began booming again after 1948). By 1980 only 7% of all employment in Barrington involved agriculture but almost 60% involved manufacturing or services sectors such as retailing or health care (the top 5 industries accounting for 73%).
