The first settlers in Crestwood were farmers who started arriving in 1836. The town was platied in 1841 and it became a village on February 17, 1902. In 1916 the name was changed to Crestwood Township and on November 1, 1951 it became a city with its own government. On December 15, 1959 Crestwood became an independent municipality again owing allegiance only to Kane County; however it retains many of the same ordinances and regulations as a community within Kane County. Crestwood has two churches: one built in 1865 and another built in 1911. There are also several businesses including four schools - Crestwood High School (grades 9-12), New Beginnings Academy (grades K-5), Holy Cross Catholic School (grades 6-8) and Our Lady of Loretto Elementary School (grades prekindergarten through 4th grade). Crestwood's rich history can be found on display at various sites throughout the township including: the Old Fort Knox Museum; Old Fort Knox Park & Recreation Area; Crestwoods Cemetery; Centerville Presbyterian Church; Good Shepherd Lutheran Church;; Bemis Finegoods Drug Store and Supermarkets Inc.; King's Hardware & Shop;; Keystone Logistics Corporation;; American Legion Post #236 (); Masonic Lodge No. 9 ; vernacular builds from around 1840s such as John Addams House which still stands today across Main Street from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.; among others

The growth of Crestwood led to the development of a number of churches, schools, and other civic institutions. By the late 1800s, Crestwood had become an important center for agriculture in Illinois. Many new homes were built in Crestwood during this time period as farmers continued to expand their operations into the area. Starting in the early 1900s, residents began moving out of Crestwood and into newer communities such as Decatur and Chicago Heights. However, continuing economic decline lead to a decline in population throughout the 1920s and 1930s until finally reaching its low point in 1940 when only 6 people lived in Crestwood (less than one-seventh of what it had been at its peak). Since then, there has been growth within the community with new initiatives being developed such as art galleries and music festivals. Today, Crestwood remains an active community with many residents engaged in local businesses and social activities outside of their homes
Crestwood was founded in 1837 by Captain George H. Crestwood and his wife. The first post office was established in Crestwood in 1841. In 1886, the town became a part of Rock Island County. In 1918, the county was dissolved and Crestwood reverted to its original boundaries.
