Crestwood, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Crestwood is located on the border of Cook and DuPage Counties and has a total area of 35 square miles (92 km²). The first Settlers in Crestwood were Nicholas Sweeny and Samuel Pope who arrived on horseback from New York in 1795. They built a cabin on what is now known as Steele Road. In 1809-10, George Rogers Clark passed through Crestwood while travelling down the Wabash River to find a new route to invade Illinois. He left his baggage here and it was found years later when levees were constructed along that stretch of river. In 1814 Isaac Newton moved into what is now Crestwood with his family after coming overland from Connecticut via Holland Patent #2. Newton had been recruited by General John Brown during the Mexican-American War as an artilleryman and assistant adjutant general for Ulysses S Grant's army at Buena Vista Springs near Peoria Heights in1812-13. Newton eventually became brigadier general in Grant's army during the Civil War serving under Ulysses S. Grant himself at Vicksburg ( Mississippi), Chattanooga ( Tennessee) and Corinth ( Alabama). During this time he also acquired land here including present day Steele Road which he named after his father-in-law, Judge David Steele of Hartford, Connecticut who had helped him finance his military career In 1824 Orville Andrus started farming around what today is called Ninth Street east of Main Street which led to the name "Orville Andrus' Prairie." When Butterfield bought some land from Andrus he renamed it "Crestwood" after himself because Butterfield saw potential for agriculture there especially since there was no water available elsewhere in Cook County . By 1850 Crestwood had about 100 residents with two churches and one school Downtown where most people lived continued to be called "Orville Andrus'" Prairie until 1878 when litigation between butterFIELD INC., A corporation organized under Act No 6 of 1865 (15 ILCS 5/6) resulted in Field being forced to change its name to The Armour store place

Crestwood, Illinois is a small town located in DuPage County, Illinois. The population was 2,746 at the 2010 census. Crestwood is one of the oldest towns in DuPage County and has been around since 1837. It was named for Colonel John P. Crestwood, who founded the original post office in 1837. The first settlers to Crestwood were farmers and traders from Ireland who arrived in the early 1830s. By 1840, Crestwood had a population of about seventy-five people. In 1847, a Methodist church was built in Crestwood and soon became an important center for religious activity inDuPage County. By 1850, there were over two hundred residents living in Crestwood. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his inaugural address within minutes of arriving at Chicago's Navy Yard on Lake Michigan. After spending time at the new White House he journeyed north to Fort Dearborn where he celebrated the Union’s victory over slavery with a dinner given by General Cassius Clay at which he also spoke out against secessionism and free trade policies being pursued by President Andrew Johnson When Lincoln returned to Chicago he took Train down State Street to Armour Square where he addressed thousands of militiamen gathered on Defense Grounds across from City Hall before turning northeast on Jackson Boulevard into Town Center where he made his final stop After this eventful day Lincoln went back home to Mount Vernon where he completed his full four year term as president
Crestwood was founded in 1831 by John Addison and his brother-in-law, Peter Larimer. The town was named for the crest of a mane of deer that Mr. Addison saw while hunting in the area. The first settlers were farmers and their families who grew corn, oats, potatoes, apples, and other crops. By 1860 Crestwood had a population of 100 people. In 1865 the village of Crestwood merged with the adjacent town of Northfield to form a new municipality.
