Crestwood is a small town in the southern Illinois district of Decatur. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur-Munster-Springfield metropolitan area. According to the 2010 census, Crestwood has a total area of just 0.8 square miles, all of which is land. The first settlers in Crestwood were Quakers who arrived in 1798 from Northampton County, Pennsylvania. In 1853, two brothers named Prentice and John Cranch founded a cotton gin on the east side of town and began producing cotton bales for local merchants. In 1860, they built a log house on what is now Valley View Drive and opened their gin as the Crestwood Cotton Gin Company. Their successors continued this business until it closed in 1969 when Union Carbide bought carbide factories throughout Illinois including Crestwood. Today there are only remnants of the old buildings left standing across five streets - Porter Avenue (the original main drag), Hickory Lane (now Valley View Drive), Main Street (now State Road 471), Elm Street (now School Rd) and West Side Road (now State Road 472). All but one building still stands - The former Girdersmith Drug Store on Hickory Lane which was built in 1922 and remains unoccupied today despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Walgreens Plaza Shopping Center #1A.- One building that does remain operational is The Dove House restaurant which was built in 1925 by JF D’Angelo & Sons Incorporated and operated by his brother Joe before it went out of business around 1990s. There were other industries such as sawmilling during peak years but these have all gone out since then leaving few reminders remaining except for some foundations that can be seen looking down upon Porter Avenue where numerous businesses once stood along with some ditches now filled with water courtesy of heavy rains over time
