Crestwood is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Crestwood is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is home to Northwestern University. The first settlers in Crestwood were James and Anna Scherfus who arrived in 1815 from Pennsylvania. They founded the village on the site of what is now known as Scherfus Road. In 1847, John A. Kapp created a townsquare out of land that he had bought from Nicholas Biddle for $100. At that time Crestwood consisted of thirteen homes, one store, and two schools. By 1860 only four homes remained in the village; these were located at Second Street and First Avenue South (now Arlington Heights Boulevard), Third Street and Prairie Avenue (now West Dundee Boulevard), and Fourth Street between Huron Avenue and Cicero Avenue (now Wabash Avenue). In 1865–66 Elisha Cooke organized a cricket team which played against other villages in Cook County during what is called “the Great Chicago Flood” while also working to improve water drainage systems around his farmlands southeast of Crestwood Village. This effort helped control water levels on many farms west of Chicago during the floods that year which destroyed many homes, businesses, churches and other structures along with large numbers of livestock including fifty thousand lambs killed by flooding within three weeks alone In 1870 Samuel Morse moved his family from Davenport Iowa to Crestwood after purchasing 320 acres east sideof town bounded by Clybourn Ave., Van Buren St., Randolph Rd./Lincoln Hwy., then southwesterly boundary line of present day Shoreline Dr./Harrison Rd.; they raised five children there before moving back to Davenport when Samuel Jr.. turned 21 years old in 1875-76 It was not until 1907 that the first electricity service was brought through Crestwood when an electrician named Harry Weisel installed wires near Southdale Ave/Beacon Hill Rd.-then just east of modern day Racine Drive - affording villagers access to education long before any other community in Cook County On July 4th 1917 Mrs....(unknown) made history as she became first female voter in Cook County when she cast her ballot at her local schoolhouse . It wasn't until 1928 when civic organizations such as Kiwanis Club & Elks Lodge #5 organized themselves into their own clubs & associations that various services like file storage were available for residents . In 1944 a new elementary school building was erected on much needed land donated by Mrs....Donaldson at corner 2nd St/Prairie Ave . girl scouts unofficially started camp there early this summer . Today crestwood offers educational opportunities for students ranging from pre-kindergarten all the way up to college degrees .....much has changed over 100 years but some things have stayed essentially same: proud traditions such as cricket dating back to 1865 continue today .....and citizens are always willing to lend a helping hand

The town grew rapidly due to its location at the head of a navigation channel on the Illinois River, which made it an important transportation hub. In 1836, Crestwood became a city and the first in Illinois. It developed into a major manufacturing center during the late 19th century with production of agricultural goods such as flour, cheese, milk, eggs and lard. In addition to its manufacturing capabilities, Crestwood also played a large role in political life during this period with several politicians from the town serving in office including Mayor John Tappan and County Treasurer Isaac Hubbard. This period of growth came to an end after World War I when the war led to decreased demand for agricultural products and heavy industry took over as Crestwood’s primary economic focus. Nowadays, much of Crestwood’s commercial activity takes place within its downtown area which is home to both local businesses and a number of major retailers including Sears Holdings Corporation (SHLD), Macy's Inc., JCPenney Co., K-Mart Inc., Dick's Sporting Goods Co., Coca-Cola Bottlery Company (KOCH) and Peet's Coffee & Tea Businesses LLC among others
