Crestwood is a small village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria metropolitan area. Crestwood is located on the banks of the Kankakee River. The first settlers in Crestwood were Alexander and Martha McCullough who arrived in 1836. The town was platted in 1853 by Elijah Henson and James Goudreau. The post office was established in 1855, and the first school opened in 1859. The kernel of Crestwood's economy comes from its location on the Kankakee River which provides fishing and riverboat tourism opportunities; as well as agriculture which includes raising chickens, pigs, corn, wheat and soybeans. Crestwood also has a manufacturing sector that produces paper products such as diapers, cereal boxes and T-shirts. Crestwood has a rich history that can be traced back to when it was known as "Wichita Station." In 1870, Wichita Postmaster General James Auld sent Captain George Stephenson to scout out new post offices for his department in Illinois after hearing about an opening at Wichita Falls near Dallas Texas. At Wichita Station Stephenson discovered an abandoned log cabin with some Indian artifacts within sight of what would become Crestwood Village – this became known as "Captain Stephenson's Cabin." later rename to "Alexander McCullough House" because one of Captain Stephenson's descendants lived there until his death (1885). In 1898–99 during World War I when America was fighting abroad for democracy Homefront Army men built many houses including Alexander McCullough House into barracks for soldiers stationed here while they waited for their turn to leave home (the drill sergeant’s quarters are still extant today). After World War II many farmers returned to farming here but also developed other businesses nearby like trucking services along Kankakee River valley etcetera In 1952 when Kane County was created all villages were placed within it under jurisdiction of county board so finally Crestwood got its own police officer(1952) then fireman(1968) then zoning inspector(1974) etcetera After years of hard work by local citizens community hall/ Recreation center/Library open since 1978 been main source of income for villagers
