The first settler in what is now Crestwood was John Wesley Grimes who founded a log cabin on the banks of the Sangamon River in 1818. At that time, there were only about fifty people living in what is now Crestwood. The Grimes family had come from Kentucky to chicagoland to start a new life and started out by growing corn and raising cattle on their farm which they sold to other farmers. In 1834 they built the first frame house in present day Crestwood when they moved into section 8 of Cook Township.. The Grimes purchased sections 6-11-15 from John Patee for $4 per acre in 1837; this made them owners of over . In 1840 Abraham Lincoln visited Chicago while he was still governor of Illinois and then went back north to visit his family at Mount Greenwood Plantation near Kankakee Lake before returning east through central Illinois and stopping at Crossroads Bible Academy on his way home where he delivered an address on July 4th (the date that America attained independence). After his speechCrossroads students formed a human chain around him as he walked off stage with Governor Douglas Huber leading the parade behind him with banners reading "Lincoln's Address - A Day That Will Live In Memory". It wasn't until 1861 that Clear Springs township was organized which led to the construction of White Hall Court House which served as both post office and courthouse until 1928 when it burned down. For many years it was thought that arson had been responsible but finally authorities ruled out any connection after examining video footage from several neighboring homes that night...
