Crestwood was first settled in 1837. The community was named after the crest of a nearby hill, which is still visible today. Crestwood grew rapidly during the early years of its development, and by 1860 it had over 100 residents. By 1865, however, the population had decreased to about 50 people due to importation of labor from neighboring towns. In 1870, Crestwood was renamed North Central Illinois because of its location in that state's northcentral region. A new courthouse and town hall were built in 1892, and in 1907 the town annexed the neighboring village of Arlington. In 1923, Crestwood became a city by vote of its citizens.
