Crestwood was platted in 1872 and named for English gentleman Major-General Sir John Forrest Crestwood (1792-1875). The town was first known as "New Harmony". In 1865, New Harmony became the capital of Illinois after Springfield was burned down by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In 1876, Crestwood absorbed Garden City to its south and incorporated as a village. The village had a population of 706 in 1895 and 1,272 in 1910. Crestwood's post office closed on December 15, 1966. The economy of Crestwood is based largely on agriculture with some manufacturing being done locally including textiles and machinery production. Some smaller businesses also exist such as a distillery which produces whiskey under the name "Crestwood rye" and an ice cream parlor which has been open since 1925
Crestwood was founded by John and Anna Crestwood in 1834. The Crestwoods were pioneers in the area, and their farmstead is still extant. Crestwood was a small community with a population of around 100 people at its peak, but it grew rapidly due to its location, access to resources, and the prosperity that came with the canalization of the Illinois River. By 1860, Crestwood had a population of over 300 people. In 1865, the town passed an ordinance banning alcohol sales. It continued to grow during the 19th century until it reached its peak in 1910 when it had a population of 462 people. However, by 1920 Crestwood's population had shrunk to only 50 people due to development in nearby towns such as Bloomington and Decatur. In 1940, crestwood absorbed neighboring village of Deerfield into its municipality boundaries
