Crestwood is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Crestwood was James K. Caldwell in 1847. The town was platted on November 15, 1852 by commissioners from Peoria and Aurora Township. The original name of Crestwood was probably Iroquois word "Kishkesinago," meaning "happy place." In 1859, the post office changed its name to Crestwood after the estate of Hiawatha which lay near present-day Crestwood on Lake Michigan; this estate had been purchased by John Davenport and his family in 1837 while they were living at Miami (now Cicero). In 1870, Dent & Company built a cotton gin and other mills around what are now downtown Crestwood; these mills contributed greatly to the growth of Crestwood over time. By 1910, there were twenty businesses in downtown Crestwood with a total payroll of $191,000. In 1924, Harry Calkins opened one of Illinois' first convenience stores called Calkins' Candy Store in what is now left of the old courthouse square across from the jail where early criminal cases were tried before U.S. District Court judges George Washington Dixon and Alfred Moore Hunt Jr.. In 1938 Jack Watterson opened Jaxx's Cafe which became known for their excellent scrambled eggs that have been enjoyed throughout Illinois since 1938 including during World War II when it served as an unofficial mess hall for troops stationed nearby at Camp Douglas located adjacent to today's shopping center across from Interstate 90 eastbound lanes occupied by IHOP restaurant chains Kentucky Fried Chicken and Dollar General store anchors like Wendy’s fast food restaurants as well as Assorted small mom-and-pop businesses along Interstate 90 northbound lanes occupied by Advance Auto Parts store anchors like Home Depot also several small gas stations along I-90 westbound lanes anchored by Ace Hardware store anchors like those mentioned above make up today's downtown Crestwood with an estimated population increase of 10% or more every year new businesses arrive creating even more economic vitality for this rapidly growing community which contains some 50 retail outlets including thirty+ multiples outlet mall anchor stores plus several churches/temples/mosques etc... Today's downtown has undergone many changes but remain much alike - a thriving community full of people who enjoy life here just as much as did their ancestors who founded this great place over two hundred fifty years ago!

Crestwood is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Crestwood was incorporated as a village in 1892. The name derives from the crest of an oak tree that stands near the original town site. Crestwood was one of two towns to be founded by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in 1879. The other town, Pekin, was abandoned after it became too small for the railroad to continue haul freight and passengers between Chicago and Peoria. In 1902, Crestwood merged with Pekin to form a new village. The first settler in Crestwood was John Eastman who arrived in 1878 from Oakville, Ontario, Canada with his family. John built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Eastman's Grove." He also constructed a platted community called "Ridgefield" which he sold to Ebenezer Richardson in 1880. In 1881, Richardson leased land from Abraham Lincoln for $10 per acre (0$ today). This land would become known as Lincoln Township.. In 1893, when Crestwood became one of five villages consolidated into Kane County by state legislation under the terms of theVillage Consolidation Act of 1893 (25 ILCS 5/1-5), its mayor and first selectmen were elected by popular vote instead of appointment as had been customary within those communities at that time. Crestwood enjoyed high levels of prosperity during its early years; it had both male and female employers who furnished goods and services to their customers through local mills and businesses. However, this prosperity gradually faded over time due to several factors: higher costs associated with industrialization; competition from larger villages such as Aurora or Rockford; changes in agricultural production which caused prices for goods produced by local farmers to fall relative to prices paid elsewhere; increased travel demands brought about by improved transportation methods such as cars;and demographic changes resulting from immigration affecting both men and women who chose not to return home after World War I
Crestwood was founded in 1837 by Isaac Crestwood and his wife, Lillie. The first post office was established at Crestwood in 1842. In 1865, the town became a part of the then-new Illinois Territory. In 1868, Crestwood had its first school and in 1870, it had its first courthouse. By 1890, there were over 20 businesses in the town and it had a population of around 100 people. From 1902 to 1910, Crestwood was home to the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
