In 1846, the name was changed to Crestwood after Michael L. Crestwood, an early settler and a justice of the peace. The first store on Main Street opened in 1861 and became one of the most popular businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1954. The last resident to live in Crestwood died on September 12th, 2009 at the age of 97 years old. The opening of Interstate 90 made it easier for people to get around and commerce started to return to Crestwood with a grocery store opening up in 1984 and another store coming online 2006 which has become known as "The General Store". In recent years there have been several new businesses added including a nail salon, hair salon and restaurant within walking distance of each other making shopping easy without leaving your house!

Crestwood was founded by Quakers in 1856 as a white settlement on the north side of Chicago. In 1912, it became an all-black community when the white residents of Crestwood moved to other parts of Chicago. At its peak in the 1920s and 1930s, Crestwood had about 10,000 residents; however, it has since declined due to loss of jobs and development around the city center. The town's rich history began with its founders who were Quakers who arrived from Philadelphia in 1856. The first settlers were costumed men and women who named their community after themselves: "Crestwood" for John Denton (a Quaker), "White Sands" for Isaac Hicks (one of several blacksmiths and carpenters who helped start Crestwood), and "Black Hills" for Ebenezer Horton (the original postmaster). In 1912, when African Americans began moving into large cities such as Chicago and Detroit throughout America during the Progressive Era, many wanted to find new places to live where they would be able to live unmolested without fear of discrimination or violence from whites. White citizens in these cities decided that they no longer wanted their black neighbors living among them so they relocated their families members and businesses to new townships located on the north side of downtownChicago which were called "All-Black Towns". These towns were intended as temporary havens while people waited for better times elsewhere in America. One such All-Black Town was Crestwood which was established on April 12th1856 by Quakers led by Reverend Amos Eaton with the goal of promoting education within this disadvantaged group so that all individuals could participate equally in society. The first resident was Mrs Elisha Birdseye followed by her husband Joseph Birdseye Sr., daughter Sarah Jane French (later Sarah Jane Faison), son Amos Eaton III (Amos Eaton IV) & wife Lucy Keyes Eaton (1857-1936). Over time more residents came including notable abolitionists Booker T Washington & Julia Ward Howe as well as politicians James Kossuth & Abraham Lincoln amongst others; however most early settlers remained anonymous until later years when town papers were published which allowed local citizens more visibility&participation within their communities especially given that most township meetings took place behind closed doors only allowing select outsiders accessto hear what transpired inside those chambers
