Crest Hill, Illinois, is a small town in the northern half of the state of Illinois. It is located on the border of Champaign County and DuPage County. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. Crest Hill is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The earliest record of human activity in Crest Hill dates back to 1836 when a letter from Daniel Webster was sent from this town asking for assistance in finding an animal that had escaped from a farmstead near by. That same year, Jethro Gibbs erected a log cabin here and continued to live there until his death in 1851. Crest Hill began as an agricultural community with land holdings stretching from present-day west side of town south to east side and north into DuPage County. By 1870, some 350 residents were living here and farming crops, raising livestock, and trading goods with other parts of the state or beyond while pursuing their interests in mining coal, lumbering timberlands west of Chicago (now owned by Peabody Coal), shipping salt water through points on Lake Michigan (now known as Calumet Harbor), manufacturing goods such as pants made from cotton thread spun around straw hats (known locally as "hatties"), shoe linings made mostly out of linen thread unraveled by hand before being dried off; making lace; weaving baskets out of reeds or grasses; dyeing fabric with indigo or other colors; etc.; among many others activities which continue today but have been greatly scaled down since then due largely to technological advancements such as jet travel and modern transportation methods! In 1912–1913 three brothers - Harry Wirtz II (1884-1966), Louis ("Lenny") Wirtz (1886-1967) & Meyer Weisshaar (1892-1976) ran two businesses - Hat Emporium on North Main Street between First Avenue & State Street and Music Machine Shop on East Main Street between First Avenue & Hare Streets - both now gone but remaining examples of “hardware” stores which specialized in repair/upkeep/replacement services for machines used in various trades including machine toolsmiths who turned everything into parts so that anything could be repaired! In 1918 Harry’s son Meyer took over operations after his father’s death leaving behind his mother Lenny who continued running things until her death in 1966 then passing it along to her son Meyer Jr., now proprietor! During World War II local residents donated materials used by American troops including blankets, clothing, gasoline cans and more importantly firearms suitable for war – most notably rifles like Winchester Model 1886 shotguns!
