In 1823, the town of Crest was founded by George Fenton and it became a part of the city of Chicago in 1847. From 1840 to 1865, Crest Hill was home to the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA). In 1865, the ISRA moved to Forest Park and Crest Hills ZIP code began designation as “The North Side”. During World War II, many local businesses participated in making munitions for the war effort including Armour and Munitions Company. After the war ended, most local businesses closed down or changed ownership. However, one business that continued operation until it closed in 1990 was Peddle’s Restaurant which served German-American customers during the war years. Today, there are few examples left of early 20th century architecture so visitors can find historical artifacts at various locations throughout town such as Main Street Office Building and Post Office which were built between 1915-1920; Masonic Temple which was erected between 1913-1916; and Old School House which was built between 1859-1861.

In 1912, when Philadelphia 76ers player Julius Erving moved to nearby West Side Philadelphia and changed his name to Julius Erving (after his favorite basketball team), he suggested that CrestHill be renamed after him instead of his original hometown of Philadelphia! The new moniker stuck and today's crest hill neighborhood features many homes built by Julius Erving himself or his family members!
