Crest Hill, Illinois is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,906 at the 2000 census. Crest Hill is one of many towns in Cook County that were established after the 1871 Act made Chicago a city. The first settlers to Crest Hill were Levi Coffin and his family who arrived in 1837 from Maryland. For a time, Crest Hill was part of Cicero Township but it was annexed byChicago in 1847. In 1870, due to increase in population and land purchases from members of the Chicago Common Council, Crest Hill became its own town. The original crest hill post office operated from 1861-1867 and it was later renamed for General Nathan Bedford Forrest (1786-1865), Confederate general during the American Civil War who had been imprisoned at Fort Dearborn on Lake Michigan Peninsula near downtown Chicago until he was released by Lincoln on May 1, 1865. The post office building still stands today within walking distance of Crest Hill's central square which has an openair market every Thursday morning since 1978. Crest Hill has several antique stores and two large malls which are anchored by Sears Holdings Corporation and JCPenney Inc.. Restaurants that have closed include Ristorante Italiano on State Street which reopened after being vacant for 11 years; Joe's Pizza across State Avenue from McDonald's closed in 2006; and Tomatoes & More at 4455 N Western Ave., which closed its doors following more than 25 years in business when local investors purchased it for $6 million USD.
