Crest Hill is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Crest Hill is located on the southwestern border of Cook County and borders Will County to the north and east, Lake Michigan to the south and west, and Lombard Township to the northwest. The first settlers in Crest Hill were farmers who started arriving in 1836. By 1853, there were three churches in Crest Hill- one Congregational, one Presbyterian and one Methodist- along with a school house. The townspeople built a courthouse/ jail in 1857 which served as their government center until it was destroyed by fire in 1886. In addition to its governmental functions, Crest Hill also functioned as an agricultural center for much of its history due to its rich soil and good climate conditions. Today, however, agriculture no longer dominates Crest Hills economy; instead it relies heavily upon manufacturing and service industries such as engineering services and software development. In 1916 when Illinois became a state, Crest Hill residents voted 2-1 to secede from Cook County and form their own state within Illinois. After some hesitation due to lack of supporting documentation (the vote was not registered or recorded), they did just that- becoming State #522 (later moved down to State #589) within Illinios without any public ceremony or discussion whatsoever! And so began what would be an interesting but ultimately successful experiment for those living within this tiny town: They managed not onlyto keep their independence but also flourished during times of political turmoil both inside and outside of Illinoisefeiting larger towns like Joliet or Peoria while still being able to maintain tight communication with each other even during difficult times! Crest Hill is an extinct town in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. It was located on the east bank of the Illinois River, about halfway between Urbana andChampaign. The population of Crest Hill was 2,500 in 1800. The first settler in Crest Hill was John Denton who arrived in 1799. He platted the area and named it for Mount Crestedano in Italy. By 1810, there were six settlers living in Crest Hill: Eli Whitney, James Witherspoon, Nicholas Browning, Rev Joseph Priestly, and Isaac Greenough. In 1815-16 Cincinnatus Griggs platted a village called "CrestHill" on land that now includes parts of Champaign and Urbana Counties.
