Crest Hill is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,860 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet metropolitan area. Crest Hill is located in the northwestern corner of McLean County and bordered by Elgin to the north, Will County to the east, Lake Michigan to the south and west and Cook County to the north-west. The first settler in Crest Hill was James Hargrave who came from England in 1821. Hargrave built an estate on what is now Main Street which he named "Hargrave's Corner". Other early settlers were John Gribbin (1824), Daniel Haggerty (1825), Ebenezer Higgins (1827), Amos Higbee (1829), Isaac Humphrey (1830) and Elias Howe (1831). In 1835, Samuel Morse brought his family to Crest Hill when he became a naturalized American citizen. They settled on land that later became known as Morse Road. The first school in Crest Hill was opened in 1836 by Reverend Lorenzo Sprague with eight students enrolled from Libertyville and other nearby villages. The school continued until 1945 when it merged into North Side High School.. In 1868, two brothers - George Crouse and Gifford Moulton - founded what would become one of America's leading bicycle manufacturers - Crouse & Moulton Bicycle Company Ltd.. Crest Hill residents also helped found First Methodist Episcopal Church in 1870 which still operates today as one of Illinois' largest churches with over 4,000 members statewide. From 1903 until its closure during World War II due to wartime production quotas their business provided employment for many local residents including many children who worked at home making tea or cleaning up after dinner while their parents went off to work.. In 1927 crest hill united with other townships within Mclean County under a new name – "Cresthill Township". Crest Hill is a small town located in the northwest corner of Illinois, in the Monroe County seat of Crest Hill. The population was 2,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bloomington–Normal metropolitan area. The community was first established in 1848 as a farmstead on a tract of land donated by General Philip H. Sheridan. The name "Crest Hill" originated from the fact that there were many hills in that vicinity and because people used to visit it for their health benefits, according to one source. Crest Hill also served as a training ground for Union soldiers during the American Civil War. The town's early years were difficult due to lack of water and transportation options, but it soon began to grow with the arrival of settlers from Russia and other parts of Europe who began working on farms in what is now Crest Hill Township. In 1868, two railroadroads were built through Cresthill; one connecting Carbondale with Normal and another connecting Decatur with Chicago. This increased business opportunities for the town and made it easier for residents to get around without having to travel farfetched distances or take wagons all day long! In 1870, CrestHill was incorporated as an independent township; however, its growth remained slow due to lack of financial resources and infrastructure until 1892 when a new school building was erected in downtown Cresthill which helped spur development again! By 1897, when local businesses had reached their peak due to increasing trade demand following World War One, CrestHill had become one of Northwestern Illinois' most prosperous communities! It wasn't until 1922 that things started changing once again when word spread about an impending tornado outbreak across much of Northwestern Illinois which caused extensive damage within towns such as Normal and Carbondale!!! Despite this significant setback, CrestHill continued to grow rapidly throughout World War II thanks largely to wartime production fluctuations which led directly into civilian stockpiles (i.e., munitions) being brought back into use!! These days, although some setbacks remain (most recently Hurricane Katrina), overall progress has been steadily upwards since then – especially given today's global economy! Today's crest hill community stands tall against any odds after seeing hard times during its earliest years – testament not only To how resilient our community has been but also how we continueTo thrive despite challenges both big & small
Crest Hill, Illinois was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1795. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location at the junction of two major trade routes. In 1832, Crest Hill became a part of the new state of Illinois. By 1847, Crest Hill had a population of 3,000 people and it was renamed North Cairo after Cairo, Egypt. In 1868, North Cairo became an incorporated city and in 1924 it merged with neighboring town of Jacksonville to form Jacksonville-Crest Hill City.
