It is considered to be one of the wealthiest towns in Illinois because it has a median household income above $90,000 and a per capita income above $24,500. The Crest Hill-Lisle School District includes schools in Crest Hill proper as well as Lisle and Winnetka Heights annexed villages within its borders. The town was founded on November 1, 1881 by John Waddell and his brother James Hogg with the purchase of 640 acres (2 km²) from Ephraim Davenport for $5 per acre ($40 per km²). At first all that was built were two churches; one Greek Revival style and one Gothic Revival style. By 1907 there were 11 houses in the town limits alone. In 1900 when the first post office opened there were only three residents living in Crest Hill – Waddell, Hogg and their wives – but by 1910 there were sixteen families living here including six children under eighteen years of age. In 1909 an addition to the original two churches was erected: First Baptist Church (now known as Stoney Point United Methodist Church) which cost $1,200 both kingly blueprints show; Second Presbyterian Church (now known as Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic church) which cost $1,500; and Third Presbyterian Church (now known as First Baptist Lutheran church) which cost $4,000 for a 2-story brick structure built by local builder Jens Meyerhoffbach & Brothers to resemble an Italianate villa from about 1800 AD called “ Villa Rusnok” also located on White Road near present day Anoka Road inside today’s village boundaries belonged to Mrs Anna Sprinkle Goudreau who resided across what is now Anoka Road from her mother’s home overlooking White Road back then called “Goudreau Manor House” where she raised many chickens before moving them into their cages over night while they laid eggs during weekdays so Mrs Anna could watch them during weekends when family members were away working outside playing farm animals or taking walks after dark around her old apple orchard property just south of Anoka Road today still lying fallow offers great photo ops! John Waddell died on October 16th 1895 at age seventy-six leaving behind four daughters: Jennie C., Ida M., May N., Katherine A.; three sons: Willard W., Jesse P., Elijah P.; eleven grandchildren: Charles F., Franklin I., Cora Luella M.; four great grandchildren: Garnet II,, Harry Lester-, Lois Severance-. In 1907 John Waddell's son Willard married Ida Murchison who had been born on December 3rd 1892 to Anna Sprinkle Goudreau (born October 15th 1893), daughter of Samuel Sprinkle Goudreau Sr.–the founder of Griggs Mill–and Julia Belle Hardesty (born February 26th 1896). They moved into newly constructed house #2 on Green Street next door to Mrs Anna Sprinkle Goudreaums home on what later became Anoka Rd.. After five years Jennie C married fellow native Illinois resident Charles Fenton Jr whom she met while attending Plainfield Academy where he taught math second grade until 1916 when he transferred to Normal University Law School where he graduated with honors in 1921 becoming America's first black law graduate ever! His wife Katherine A.(1896-1982), daughter of physician George Washington Aiken IX went onto marry Dr Elmer Sager USN also attending Normal University Law School graduating with honors 1931 also becoming America's third female Naval officer!! Their son Garnet III born 1932 followed suit joining them shortly thereafter! Three more children would be born plus another grandchild before all six parents passed away within five decades of each other…in less than fifty years!!! Which speaks volumes about character traits shared by most such long lasting marriages!! In recent years there have been several projects initiated in order to improve life in Crest Hill such as resurfacing streets, planting more trees and bushes along streams etc., All these efforts have led to new residents moving into this small town starting to call it "The Hills" again!
The Crest Hill community was first developed in the late 1800s on a tract of land that is now part of the city of Chicago. The area was named for Scottish highlanders who had settled there in the early 19th century. Crest Hill became a major center for agricultural production and manufacturing during the 20th century, and its development helped spur growth in Chicago's nearby neighborhoods.
