Crest Hill has seen some difficult times over recent years including two natural disasters: The 2006 flood that destroyed much of its infrastructure and damage to homes caused by severe thunderstorms brought on by Hurricane Katrina; and The 2011 tornado outbreak that devastated portions of west suburban Kane County, damaging more than 100 homes and injuring dozens more. However, throughout all these events CrestHill has always shown resilience with strong community spirit and continued support from its citizens who have worked together to rebuild their community

Crest Hill is a small town in Northwestern Illinois, United States. The population was 916 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1811 by John and Martha Crest and their families. The Crests were among the first white settlers in what is now Northwestern Illinois. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Tualatin River, about two miles from present-day Crest Hill Elementary School. In 1837, they erected the Ridgefield Presbyterian Church, one of the first churches in that area. The crest family continued to live here until 1925 when they sold their farm to buyers who moved it to Windsor, Ontario, Canada. From 1927 until its closure in 1990 as a public school, Crest High School served Crest Hill residents and students from nearby townships including Park Forest and Park View. In recent years, Crest has experienced growing pains as many residents have left for better opportunities elsewhere in Illinois or outside of the United States. However, with some investment by local businesses (including new construction of a daycare complex) and support from civic organizations such as the American Legion Post 8442 (which provides social services), there are plans underway for redevelopment which may include housing developments on property now used for agricultural purposes.
The Crest Hill area was first settled by the French in the early 17th century. The area was then known as the Poultney Township and later, as Crest Hill Township. In 1836, the township was divided into two sections, Crest Hill Township on the east side and Newton Township on the west side. In 1872, Newton Township was renamed to Crest Hill after its founder, Elijah Clements cresting a hill in that same year. The population of Crest Hill grew rapidly from its original handful of residents in 1836 to over 1,500 by 1860. By 1920, the population had grown to 6,000 and had reached its peak with 11,000 residents in 1940. By 1960, it had shrunk to 3,500 residents and remains today at about 1,600 residents.
