Crest Hill is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1855 by farmers who came from the town of Creston, Indiana. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. Crest Hill is located in the Chicago metropolitan area. Crest Hill was named for what are now known as Creston and Pekin counties, Indiana. The original settlers were from neighboring towns in Champaign County, Illinois. In 1855, they moved to this site because of good land values and favorable climate conditions. By 1870 the town had grown to a population of 2,500 people. The first school in Crest Hill was built on the corner of First Street and Second Avenue in 1868. This building served as both a public school and church until it burned down in 1895. A new school was built on Third Street between Depot Avenue and State Street in 1896-97 using local lumber that had been donated by businessmen John Wessels and George Wessels. The old school building still stands today as part of the Crest Hills Mall shopping center on First Avenue Extension (now Racine Road). In 1914, Crest Hill became one of five townships that formed Brockton Township (now Rockford Township). In 1928 Brockton Township merged with Darien Township to form Plainfield Township (now Lake Forest Terrace). At various times during its history different businesses have been located within or around Crest Hill including: Armour's Department Store; J C Penney; Kwik Shop; Browning Arms gunsmith shop; Sears & Roebuck department store; IHOP restaurant; Anheuser Busch Brewery beer brewery....The following are some notable events which occurred within or near Cresthill: 1927 - Plainfield township merged with Darien township to form Clearbrook township 1951 - J S Bauer opened their first store inside what is now the mall complex called "TheCenturyLink Center" 1972 - opening of Hooters restaurant

The growth of Crest Hill and nearby towns led to the creation of the Village of Crest Hill on January 1, 1850. In 1870, Cresthill became part of the newly created town of Skokie. On May 3, 1907, Skokie merged with neighboring township La Grange and formed the new city of Chicago.
