During World War II, American Armory produced munitionssafe protectors for ammunition storage facilities in Illinois and Wisconsin. Crest Hill is a small town in the southeast corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Crest Hill was settled by Germans in 1847 and named for Promontory Point on the Michigan River. The first buildings in Crest Hill were log cabin type structures built by German Settlers in 1847-48. By 1860, many Germans had moved to Crest Hill from other parts of Cook County and northern Indiana. In 1870, two men named Ebenezer and John Kapp founded a gristmill that became one of the largest flour mills in southern Illinois. By 1880, there were over 100 people living in Crest HIll and it had become an important center for heavy industry including a foundry and wagon factory as well as several sawmills and other shops. In 1903, when Crest Hill became an election precinct, it was located about four miles west of downtown Chicago along what is now Elmhurst Road near Union Avenue. At that time Chicago's only streetcar line ran through Crest Hill making it convenient for residents to vote on issues such as city wide elections which took place every four years at that time As early as 1907, Crest HIll had started to experience problems with public drunkenness which led to calls for stricter liquor laws throughout Cook County In 1916–1917 alcohol prohibition began to be enforced sporadically throughout Cook County with some areas not even permitting sales until 8 p.m.–2 a.m., while others allowed open carry On October 25th 1917 local law enforcement responded to reports of violence between men who had just finished drinking at a dance hall near the edge of town) After investigating they determined that this occurred because "several individuals having recently left [the] saloon" went home after drinking too much and then got into some sort of argumentative altercation" which turned violent Kronenberger said "This case did more damage than all our Prohibition campaigns combined." This event brought national attention to Crest Hill which helped solidify its image as an roughneck frontier town . From 1917 until 1933 all voting took place through paper ballots although electronic voting systems began being developed beginning in 1934
